Hurt, Agony, Pain, Love-It

This outdoor intervention/installation refers to a "no pain, no gain" culture; to a subtle form of control which evidences itself as "self-help". If we are encouraged to find fault in ourselves, we are necessarily diverted from finding fault in our leaders, in our society and in its values.

The work also refers to the opening scene of the film Silence of The Lambs, that shows Clarice Starling running through the FBI training ground. A tree bears similar "motivational" signs. Thus the work also refers to messages absorbed by women in the West over the last 20 years; that they can have it all if only their attitude is correct; that there are no barriers to success except themselves.
